I use a 2" strip for many bindings since I use low loft batting and like a very skinny binding. Just attach with a very scant 1/4" seam. If you want to sew it all by machine, you can always use an invisible thread in the bobbin so it won't show as much if you wander off the line just a bit when stitching it down.

I have used 2" strips when I am short on fabric. The finished project looked nice.

I find I can use a narrower binding (e.g. 2") if I first run a zig-zag stitch all around the perimeter of the quilt. Makes it less bulky, so the smaller binding will fit.

Some people prefer a thinner binding. If you trim your batting a bit, you should be fine.

It will still work as usual. I always cut my binding 1 3/4" and fold it over so I get a very narrow border. That's just the way I like them. Narrow to wide, it's all personal preference.

I agree with Geri B. I've used 2" strips many times with great results. In fact the widest I ever cut my binding strips is 2 1/4". I like a nice tight binding that us well filled with batting. Good Luck!

In contrast ......... recently I wanted a wider binding.
The quilt just seemed to call for that.
So I cut the strips at 4", folded in half and made my seam width wider.

Anything is do-able ... you just need to think it thru as to how to make it work!

When I started quilting almost 20 years ago a friend who was a great mentor for me said she let's the quilt tell her how wide to make the binding. Some quilts look great with just a narrow strip to frame them. Others need a wide binding to stop your eye at the edge of the quilt. Some need the binding to blend right in with borders. Others need an additional pop of color on the edges. I like to lay some folded pieces along the edge and just look at them for a while before I make a final decision. One thing I always do is to keep all my extra fabric with the completed top so I don't accidentally cut it up for a new project. Bet you can't guess how I learned that lesson! LOL

Also isn't there a way to sew two strips together...different colors.....then when folded in half you get a binding with a very thin contrast color at one edge or other....don't remember how........maybe Nancy Notions video...maybe someone here has a better recall than I....

OK, I didn't stop and read all the suggestions but just had a thought. You might want to sew another strip to your binding, your choice of width, and have a different color on each side, or 2 colors on one side and one color on the other???? Just a crazy thought.
