I ALWAYS quilt first. I don't do the best job on keeping the backing taut when basting, so when quilting I can straighten the backing as I quilt to make sure it is not 'loose' somewhere. If I sewed binding on first it would be disaster.

I remember the lady that said she binds first, but I always quilt first.

I bind last, sometimes I have had to remove pins and smooth top out to the edge. Just works best for me. No rules as to how to do things.

I hadn't thought about quilting right to the edge. Thanks.

Thank you all for your replies. I will definitely quilt first and then bind. Hadn't thought about all the pitfals of doing it the other way so glad I asked.

Hmm, I've never heard of that. I've always done it after.
