I use straight grain binding (unless edge is wavy). Sometimes all by machine, sew on the back and flip to front and top stitch, or if doing it by hand, sew to the front and flip to the back and hand stitch.

my mother can do it totally by machine and it looks great. she sews it to the back first then pulls to the front and top stitches. i can't. she tries to teach me but i still cant do it. i do the glue binding by sharon schomburg and handstitch the back. which i hate.
