I cut the strips at 2 1/2 inches. I stitch it on the quilt at a sweet spot right between between 1/4 " and 3/8". When folded over it is almost perfectly in half. When I sew at 1/4" there is too much binding on one side.

Rhonda K ~ That's interesting. I cut at 2 1/2" and stitch a fat 1/4" to get equal binding on each side. What batting are you using?

    i cut mine at 2-7/8,

the finding finishes at about 7-16 inch wide.

why that width? because if i set the needle at the most left position and sew with the right edge of the presser foot on the edge of the binding and quilt. i like the look of a wider binding.

I have transitioned from 2.5 to 2.25 and now I do 2 inches. It is a thin binding but it is full and even. I don't use a walking foot and I don't serge the edge. I've been happy with the results. I like to sew in front and hand stitch to back. I don't have any arthritis, carpal tunnel issues, etc that keep me from doing this. If I am going to sew on the back and machine stitch to the front I do a 2.25 binding.

Always 2-1/2", it works perfectly for me. I now machine sew all bindings.

i use 2.25 and my bindings are always full. i was chatting with a local judge the other day and a perfectly lovely quilt did not win a prize because the binding was partially 'empty'
