Black Fabric
#13
Back in my previous life when I was dying fabric, black was a nightmare. There were three recipes, one that went black-red, one that went black-blue and one that went black-green. I ended up buying a good quality black rather than try to hand dye it. I was using procion dyes and setting with salt. To get black you had to use so much dye that the fibers of the fabric were compromised.

I've had problems with black. It was a beautiful plaid with black as part of the plaid. After a few years of wear, the black developed holes. The other colors were fine, just holes in the black parts. But that was a very long time ago. I haven't heard of anyone experiencing this lately.

I recently got a very good price on some Kona in white from Fabric.com. The more you buy the better the price. I think I bought 10 yards and paid $5 and change per yard. Get a code from retailmenot.com and possibly save more or free shipping. I am in Alaska, so free shipping isn't always an option. Lots of retailers still think we are in a foreign country!

I received some black material a year ago and I went to use it 2 days ago. I made 1 cut and pulled very carefully. When I looked down it had ripped. I then tested the rest of the 10 yards and it did the same. Needless to say, I through it out. I almost cried.

I use black all the time but I won't buy anything except Kona or A Moda brand. They have been great fabrics & no problem with them at all. There is another I buy also & I can't remember the name right off. One of those senior moments. With all of the work that goes into a quilt, you want to use the best fabric you can. You can buy quality fabrics on sale at really good prices. There is a lot of competition out there so they are on sale some place almost daily. I get lots of emails everyday from the online stores.
