Default Blanket stitch applique as quilting?

I am making 2 crib quilts for my niece who just had twins. She has asked for polka dots. My plan is to make a bunch of circles in different sizes and fabrics, then fuse and applique them onto white Kona.
If I sandwiched the Kona and the backing, then appliqued the circles with a blanket stitch- would that work properly? I have done the applique first, then quilted, but not used the blanket stitch as a quilting stitch. Any opinions?

You can do that. Bet it would be really cute too. Sounds like the Appliquilt method (there's a book by that name).

I was just watching a Youtube video this morning that shows that method.

Just a clarification - you are planning to add batting to the sandwich? Simple answer: Yes, you can use the blanket stitch as both outline and quilting. You will need to go slow so the layers won't shift. I would recommend using basting spray 505.

Sounds like a great idea ... I would think you would want to keep your applique/blanket stitch large and stretched.

Sounds like a cute top ... and please tell me that your backing is going to be a polka dotted fabric too to keep with her theme!

With lots of washings impending, I am wondering if more of a satin stitch might hold up better.

It would probably work but it's going to leave rough stitching on the back. I'd do the applique first and then quilt it. You can quilt over the appliques.
