Flannel is notorious for shrinking and bleeding. Unless I am using it for a rag quilt, I always prewash it and dry on hot. I am currently dealing with a rag quilt made from various left over flannel squares. The rich deep purple ones are very annoying because they are bleeding like crazy. Yes, I can certainly feel your pain!

I used the Dr. Beckmann Colour & Dirt Collectors. Maybe they'd work on your deep purple, too. I haven't noticed much shrinkage, but perhaps the whole quilt shrank and I just haven't seen it because it's not on the bed yet. :-)
