If you are happy with it. who cares. I did the same things once and it was a bugger to hand stitch but it looked really nice.

If it work, and you like it, no worries. The quilting police have been laid off because of the economy, lol

If it looks good, I'd leave it! Maybe you just created a new way to bind a quilt!!

That's narrower than what I do (I cut 2 1/4" or 2 1/2") but the purpose of binding is to enclose the raw edge of your quilt. So long as that is done, size doesn't matter. LOL.

I sewed it on from the front by machine and turned and pinned it to the back to hand sew down. It is narrow so all the binding is on back of quilt. It looks good that way actually but wasn't sure how many quilting rules I broke doing it this way. Should I take it off and start over with larger binding strips ?

I would not tell anyone that it was a mistake, just pretend you planned that new style of binding for that quilt because it looks better that way. Before you know it, your quilting friends will copy it. The quilt police might even change their rules! LOL!,

There aren't really any quilting "rules". I consider them to be more like "guidelines". If it looks good to you then I say keep it.

Glad to hear what I did wasn't that unusual (but not glad you did it)
I used it as an artistic accent, left it on the right side, and just added another binding
