As has been said previously, the entire book is just the one quilt.

The copying would be a copyright violation.

Does this apply if it's out of print? It's no longer being sold. And who's to know anyway as long as you don't try to make a profit from it.

Whether or not it's in print doesn't matter.

Copyrights are in effect for 70 years past the date of death of the copyright holder unless the heirs extend it. In that case, it's longer. And copyright violation is illegal, whether someone finds out about it or not and whether you make a profit or not.

I don't think you friend can use this pattern in kits from her shop without permission from the authors.(I think that's what you said in your post, although perhaps I misunderstood!!) I sure that's copyright infringement! :D

It's not a criminal matter, it's civil, so they would be filing a lawsuit, not pressing charges. I think we can all agree, however, that ethical decisions shouldn't be based on whether or not you get caught. I think we can also agree that doing something worthwhile in one area of our lives does not excuse doing something inappropriate in another area of our lives.

Let's not get into the "I-hate-copyright" vs. "do what's right" argument again. I love that people are able to get their copyright questions answered here, and I think the OP has gotten some great suggestions about how and where to find her book legally. I really hope it works out! Please post pics if you decide to make a version of the quilt!

You know what? I've been known to xerox books and break copyright laws! Yes, it's true (wrists extended, waiting for handcuffs). Surprisingly, I haven't been arrested--not before now, anyway. Now that I've admitted it publicly, I suppose someone will come after me, but first they'll have to find me. Of course they'll need to know what I've xeroxed first so that the appropriate author can press charges. Hmmmm, I wonder how that's going to happen. What will I do to redeem myself for my life of crime? I guess it's more charity quilts for me! Maybe I can do my penance that way.
