Border to enlarge a piece

Border to enlarge a piece
This is based on an art piece from the 4 yr old grandson of a friend. I include a picture of both.Due to yardage constraints, the "art" section is enlarged to only 36x48. All the black crayon lines still need to be added, probably heavy black couched yarn.
I want to make it bigger and more useful as a lap robe for TV watching.
The colour for the boarder has me hesitating though I'm leaning towards solid black, a 6 to 8 inch addition all around.
Anyone else have any other suggestions so as not to compete with the centre?

Since it is for a child .... maybe a black inner border and a rainbow check like the basket for the outer border / or the binding on your black border to give it pop?

I love the original art and would definitely try to make it look like a framed picture. I'm attaching one of mine, not to take away from your lovely piece, but to show how easily it's done with the right fabric. I used two black/gray batiks, mitered the corners and added a label just like it would look in an art gallery.
Oooops - I can't seem to remove the duplicate. Sorry!
