How about borders the size you need on the sides and a much narrower border on the bottom (and possibly the top) just for continuity?
I think borders would help to draw up or ease the bias edges of your piecing if needed. They would give a little opportunity for shaping the edge. I can't tell from your picture whether or not that is needed. I simply find a bias edge hard to control.

Beautiful quilt! Of course you can add just side borders. I did that recently to make a king quilt really the right size for my bed. I used a solid color, but I did audition several until I found the one I wanted. I think I added 16 inches total....8 on each side, and the quilt looks great on the bed.
Good luck with what you decide.

This was my thought as well-- solid border to frame the gallery of artwork full of glorious color and pattern.
QUOTE=SherB;7334114]Thanks NJ. I'm going to redo the headboard to a solid white and painting the walls a medium gray. I think you are right. A solid 5 or 6" border just on the sides. Less sewing and fuss and no distraction. This has been on my design wall and in the sewing process for 9 months so I am anxious to finish it and get it off to the LAQ so I can get the room finished.[/QUOTE]

This is a beautiful quilt! As others have said, it's fine to add borders just on the sides. How much do you want to add to each side? If it's a small amount (up to twice the width of the borders around the diamonds), then I would go with a dark border that reads as solid. A dark turquoise or purple would be nice. If you want more width, maybe something like this?

Since the diamonds are based on 60 degree triangles, I would stick with that angle in the border. To me, flying geese (90 degree triangles) would look out of place. Whatever you choose, I think it will be great!
