When putting your borders on, do you do the sides then the top and bottom or do you work your way around the quilt?
Also if you sew a scant 1/4 on your blocks would you want to sew a scant also making the length of the borders and when putting them onto the quilt top?

If not doing mitered corners -

Most people put both sides on,
THEN both shorter ends (top and bottom)

For one reason, it usually takes less fabric that way.

I have put my binding on this way before. I am doing the inner and outer borders. The going to miter my binding.

Sides and then top for me, too. I usually cut my borders 1/2 to 1 inch wider than I want. This gives me a bit extra for when the quilting pulls it in a bit and it's easier to square it up before I put the binding on.

The woman who taught my quilting class told us to sew the borders on each side starting in the middle to minimize stretch, etc. I'm getting ready to put on my first border and decided it needs to be mitered. Am I crazy or what?

I was also taught this way, but the explanation I was given, was on rectangular quilts especially, it makes them appear more square. I dunno, I just do what I was told.

Try an experiment. Draw out your quilt top and draw the border both ways and see what is pleasing to the eye. most will opt for the sides first and top/bottom last.

Not really. Just remember to allow enough fabric on the ends to accommodate the miter.
