    Smile Bowl Cozies

Hi...I have a bunch of 10 inch squares and wanted to try to make bowl cozies. Do I need to wash the 10 inch squares first? It would be so easy to just start with the 10 inch squares unwashed.

    Thanks so much!

I never washed my fabric first. As Tartan said....cotton for everything since they will be going in the microwave.

I don't wash mine before but have washed the bowl cozy plenty of times and it is just fine, so I would say no you don't have to.

I made a lot of these for Christmas gifts. Be careful that some battings say they are 100% Cotton but when you read the package they also have polyester in them. I only buy batting that is microwave safe. I did not wash my fabric. I left my friends and family know that I do not use mine in the microwave, but put the warm bowl in it after, but they can use them in the microwave. I also remind them that in the summer they are great when eating ice cream.

I am ready to make a few of these but also have a question, do you have to put a layer of some kind of heat something like you do in hot pads? You can tell I don't know what I'm talking about and I've never made a hot pad either, just read the directions.

Don't put any "heat something" in the cozies - that stuff we use for potholders contains metal and, if by some chance, people use the cozies in the microwave, they will cause damage to the microwave.
