hope I'm not too late to add to this question?? My yellow lab sheds light hair... my beagle sheds dark hair... sooo, you might want to find out the primary color of hair and choose fabrics that will camouflage well? Also, use generous seam allowances, especially if you use denim!! I made a denim bed cover and, due to inexperience, used 1/4" seams... every time I wash the cover I have to repair... I'm actually in the process of starting over and making a whole new cover. Lesson learned!! Have fun is the most important thing!!

I make loads of beds for our Fur-Babies, as does our group, when we run out of own Fur-Babies to give them to we give them to Charity Shops and Animal Shelters and they cost next to nothing to make!

Take a pillow case and stuff them with all and I do mean ALL your quilting off-cuts, threads, fabrics and batting, stitch across the pillow case occasionally so it makes pockets, that way all the stuffing won't go into a ball when washed, (they do wash superbly). For smaller size ones for kittens, cats and puppies you can two out of one pillowcase!

Here is a pic of Muffin's favourite one, at present It looks dirty but that is because she always takes her bones and chews onto it and she hates me washing the delicious smells away!

I have been trying to come up with an idea of how to use a couple of blocks that I'm not using in the quilt I'm currently working on and this thread has given it to me! My cats would love another kitty blanket and I have scraps of fleece and flannel that I can use as well. Thanks!

I've looked into doing this also and here's what I've discovered after talking to some of the shelters.

They would be looking for mats to line the crates so I would suggest if you want to sell them for extra money, you could make mats (will explain in a second).....that would fit the 3 typical sizes of dog crates (or cat crates which would be smaller). Here's a link to a popular site for pet needs showing the type of bed mat I'm talking about.

As for making the mat, you can stuff it with a foam pad at least 2" thick or polyfill. I've used fabric scraps for beds for my spoiled doxie but that makes them quite heavy .... then tie like a tied quilt to help from shifting. I found this tied process not easy without a good, long upholstery needle.

    Good Luck in your venture!!!

Thanks for the idea. I have four cats that lay on kitchen rugs on top of my counter in my sewing room, they like to throw up on them, as cats are known to do. In warm weather the rubber backed mats air dry hanging outside. In the winter it is near impossible to get them dry. I'm thinking if I made them quilts to lay on they could just go into the dryer. Would make my life easier. Thanks again.

My quilting group..had a project called,"Going to the dogs" , We found the sizes for the 3 different size cages and made quilts for the animal shelter...no polyester because claws catch in it . No ties or buttons. Good luck.
Check. Dog supply houses for the sizes.
