I buy lots of cute buttons from Home Sew, Bethlehem, PA. Their prices on things are good, but their shipping seems a bit high. So, I save up my list until I get enough items to make it worthwhile. They have a catalog that comes regularly. www.homesew.com

Go online to www.shopgoodwill.com and browse through the crafts section (sign in first, privacy is good here) and you will be amazed at what they auction off (of yes, it is an auction). They offer bags of buttons (of course it is what you get, as is) and usually it is about 4 pounds. It is easy to place a bid and they will inform you if you are overbid. I have an example for you; I placed a bid on a Blue Singer 1945 sewing machine in v. good condition, parts,(of yes and there are pictures of items being auctioned). AND I got it for $37.52, shipping included. I know this is a long post but I believe this is a good site and a great way to help others.

There are vintage buttons on Etsy...if I can toot my own horn...my shop is Allbuttons. It is pretty low on inventory these days, but there are lots of other shops selling for good prices too.

I work for an auctioneer and sometimes there are jars or even bags of buttons. The only thing is that they go really high. I don't understand why some people find the need to outprice you for just a couple of buttons that they turn around and sell on ebay or wherever. I use buttons on several different craft projects.
