.On my machine the thread holder is horizontal. The thread is supposed to roll off the back of the spool so that the spool turns away from me. If I was to turn the spool so that the slot was on the other end it the thread would roll off the front of the spool and the spool would turn towards me and that doesn't work with my machine. I guess the words "front" and "back" aren't quite accurate but I can't think of any other way to describe it since the spool is laying sideways.

Try filing it smooth, just so there are no pointy parts sticking up, then coat it all the way around with nail polish. Couple coats with complete drying between each coat should give long life to the polish.
