I agree with "use what you like, not what 'they' like." I love traditional quilts and traditional fabrics for quilts. When I began quilting my goal was to make as many traditional blocks and designs as I could. Well that was an impossible dream. I keep getting caught into the "trap" of new designs and some new fabrics. My mind is as messy as my sewing room. But I DO like calicos and Civil war repros. This has been an interesting thread.

My dictionary says Calico is: 1. A coarse cloth, usually printed with bright designs. 2. Plain white cotton cloth. Covered with spots of different colors; mottled: a calico cat.

Hi, Red Stilletos. There is a store in Gastonia, NC that had a HUGE collection of calicos, Civil War, and Little House on the Prarie. While the owner of the business has retired, the kids are running it and I think it is still okay. It's name is Mary Jo's.

Calicos are always in style! It is a traditional fabric that I love seeing used in quilts. One of my goals is to make a calico quilt.

Caicos are in integral part of quilting.Like Feline Fanatic says, they are being produced today, Kansas Troubles by Moda is an excellent example, and used all the time. My favorites are the 30's type, cheerful and fun. I hope you incorporate them in your work, if for no other reason than they should make you smile!

I think it just depends on the project you are doing. Some things work nicely with batiks and some things need the calico look. I'm working on a Farm Girl quilt right now that I feel looks best with the little prints. I also have some batiks for a different type project. Use what ever you love or makes your heart feel happy.

I also agree it depends on the project and the look you are after. I'm no fan of calicos, though I do have a small stash of them, but my sis loves them. When I think of calicos I picture the "hippie chick" shirts we used to make in the late '60's! Showing my age!

I love the calicos but it just depends on the quilt or project I'm making as to what type of fabric I use.

Calicos are not out of style.............I frequently will use them when they "read" as a more solid color...........

I was at a local mall with girlfriends last week and saw THIS blouse in a trendy boutique aimed at 15-25 year olds. Thought I'd stepped back in time to 1982. Where are the prairie skirts and Cherokee wedges???
