I did not even think of tree skirts! What a great idea ~ this board is just the absolute best!
try looking at any tree skirts -- they are all round or octagonal.
A friendship star center with panels on both ends might be the easiest

This is what I did, a dresden plate that I pillowcased instead of binding. You can cut the wedges to make it any size you want.
