I bought my spool stand from Connecting Threads for $11.20 on sale. They are great.

You can set the large spool in a glass or heavy cup that won't tip over. Place these behind your machine and run the thread thru the top.

Works just like one of the more expensive thread stands.

A quilting instructor recommended this to me and it works.

I use the large spools of thread on my machine and what I do is put the large spool of thread in a quart jar behind my machine and it works great.

These are not the cones. I have a cone holder but these are the Connecting Thread Essentials. They are 2 1/2 inches tall with a larger hole than regular spools.
You can still put them on the cone holder. I do all the time. Works perfectly!

This may not work for you..but one day I had that problem and wasn't headed to any store soon..so I put my serger up close to my machine and ran my thread off it!!

I just set my cone in a vase or planter thing on the floor under my sewing machine table. And it works just fine. I have gone through almost two of those big cones. Try it, until you want something more fancy to the eye.
