I've seen the chicken scratch before...my SIL does it...it's a variety of embroidery stitches..she just does it on 1 layer of fabric.

i don't know what episode it was but Sewing with Nancy by Nancy Zimmerman just did an episode withing the last few weeks showing this very technique...they were doing it on a purse body but would work on any...if you pull up her web site and do a search you will find it...it looks really neat, and not that difficult, just maybe time consuming.

Author/quilter, John Flynn, featured textured hand quilting when he was a guest on HGTV's Simply Quilts. I don't know if he has printed instructions for his technique, but you can contact him at www.flynnquilt.com

I found it!!! It's from a book called "Japanese Garden Quilt" by Karen Kay Buckley. I came across it on this site:

    http://www.stitch-n-frame.net/cgi-im...ardenquilt.jpg

The website is www.stitch-n-frame.net (in case the link above doesn't work).

If you get the book, will you tell us how on EARTH that textured stitching is done, please??

The book is very reasonably priced (from $11.00) on Barnes & Noble. Her new DVD sounds fabulous...I might have to check it out after the holidays.

For some reason I cannot get the link to work properly for me. Maybe it's a good thing, since I've already got a list of books I want to buy that is as long as my arm. Probably longer if I stopped to count!
