I made this tied baby quilt for my grandson. The instructions came from SEW MANY QUILTS, March/April 1998 Volume3, Number 1. I would be glad to send them to you if you are interested.

Congrats... There is a wonderful baby quilt collection book. It is "PS I Love You" by Lynda Milligan and Nancy Smith. Many great designs and ideas. I've made several of them over the years. If you're interested and can't find it, I have an extra one you're welcome to.

I think the Downey quilt design makes a nice baby quilt...alternating a 4 patch with a 6" square of a focus fabric.
It's quick to make up and it ccan be done in any colors. I would suggest going to a LQS and just looking at their fabric selections.
Congratulations on your baby news. Eiltcoq.

First CONGRATS!!! Warm Wishes is a really easy one to do, just squares and a rail fence.

For the advice part, as a beginning quilter, what baby quilt designs would you recommend? Want to go buy fabric tomorrow and get going right away. Any tips, advice will be greatly appreciated!

I agree that you should probably wait to see what she is going to paint the baby's room. If you can't wait, something with either crayon colors or green and yellow would be nice. There are lots of patterns that make nice baby quilts. Congratulations on the new grandbaby!!

Grandchildren are the best. Hope you live close enough to get to enjoy this little one as he/she grows.

I really like pinwheels for baby quilts. You could use all colors - all pastels or all brights. You could even alternate the pinwheel blocks with a theme block. I'm working on a frog baby quilt. I alternated frog printed panel blocks with pinwheel blocks in green and brown. Enjoy yourself and the new grandbaby. Congratulations. - Cynthia

The best response I've gotten to the many baby quilts I have made is a rag edged flannel receiving blanket. I used scraps of flannel in plains and prints and sewed a heart shape on the squares to hold them together.
