I am a hand quilter and have always used the thimble that have that have a really deep indentation, that looks as though was soldered on separately, because looks as though it is brass. They come in large sizes. I will say it took me a very long time to get use to a thimble. But I have now been hand quilting since 1983 and that is the only thimble I use. But I have seen many people quilt without any thimble. I am always amazed and whatever works and does the job is the way to go.
