Thanks for the info. I find it very strange when I go to a sewing machine shop and the clerks don't know what they are talking about. All these stores need to do more customer training. At the price of products for machines I would think that the clerks shoud know what they are talking about.

Don't take it to Hancock's. I had mine repaired a year ago, and it just broke again even though I had hardly used it. It is a Singer 519. They kept it for 3 weeks and it still made a loud noise when I got it back with a $130.00 bill.

I am very lucky to have a coworker whose neighbor was the maintenance guy for their local sewing factory before it closed a number of years ago. He charged $15 for fixing one of mine, $17.50 for another, and a third was free because it was a broken plastic gear that he did not have. Also bought a reconditioned older model (not really vintage yet I don't think) from him for $50. Now he's saying he can't do it any more as he's 92 and can't see well enough to do it any more...boohooo!
Billy, I'll keep you in mind if another one messes up!

Hello to all , I am a little lucky in the fact i have a man come to the house to service my machines . i have an old singer , and a newer nechhi, he services them both for 30 pounds , about 50 doll , at least you can watch him and see what happens , the only downfall is he looks about 106 , and is the only one who does this within 250 miles of me , so lets hope he lasts a while longer:)

I frequently clean my machine myself. I have a long wand with a small brush on the end that can get lint from almost anyplace in the machine. I have also taken the outside cover off and blown it free of dust. It's not that difficult to do.

They so called cleaned a couple of machines while I was there in a 15 minute period. The guy told me that they would finish over half of the machine today just in for "tune ups".
And they charge $75 a pop for that and if they find something wrong and if you want to have the repair done they will stick it to you again for parts, and labor.
