When my Grandma went to Heaven 11 years ago, the last quilt she & my great-aunt (her Sister)made was the casket cover instead of flowers. A great way to remember her love of family & quilting.

    OH Ramona you're so funny.

i made a quilt for my friend michele's sil who was diagnosed w/cancer. the plan was for michele & i to make it for her to take to chemo, but sadly, the cancer was too far gone when it was discovered.

since michele was busy getting her sil's house ready for an invalid, i literally threw together a quilt in 2 days so it would be ready when she came home (thank god for a snow day!)

sil passed away about 4 weeks later.. i went to the wake and was STUNNED to see this thrown together quilt topping the casket... i had sown photos on it in such a way that she could look at them in her lap, and they had it draped down so that part was in her lap in the casket..

i was so humbled to see how much it had meant to her & her family.

    I like that idea.

Has anyone else thought about doing this??? I know we don't like to think about death, but it is coming to all of us.
I think this is a beautiful idea. Flowers are beautiful but such a waste of money with something as costly as a funeral.

When my sister passed away the undertaker had a quilt on top of her going out the house. It was just so appropriate and made me feel good that she had one on her. Like your idea.

My husband and I have joked for years that we want to be put in a cardboard box and buried in the woods somewhere.Unfortunately it isn't allowed. We both plan on being cremeated. I just feel like a funeral is such a huge expense at a time when most people can't afford it. I love the idea of a funeral quilt. I will have to give it some thought and get started on it. I don't plan on needing it any time soon.

Recently, a lady in my quilt club showed us her quilt she had made for her casket cover....when that time comes. It was beautiful...made of pink and black. Her sister told us she was making herself one, also. Then, she told us the funniest thing that she wants done: She wants everyone to sign the guest book beside the numbers in the guest book. Then she wants pieces of paper with corresponding numbers to be put in a hat at the end of her service, and whomever has the "drawing number"....with their matching numbered name in the guest book....GETS the quilt!! Is that not the funniest and neatest thing to do!!! I want to do a quilt for my casket, too....and I'm seriously thinking about the "drawing" idea, too, as my children have already passed on before me.

Another thought, my DH has always said he wants the American flag to drape his coffin. Well, I recently made him a Quilt of Valor depicting his service in both Army and Marines. He LOVED it!! Now, he wants the quilt to drape the casket and to put his flag in a triangular shadow box at the end of the casket. I like that idea, too!!!
