I had bad experiences with coloured chalk... Washable markers work well, though!

Always test first with the fabrics you are using in a particular quilt. I have had good success with Crayola washable markers and use them on most items. However, I always test them because different manufacturers of fabric use different chemicals in the finishing of their products and I want to be sure I don't create a problem. By the way, my test sample includes the fabric, batting and backing. I mark on the sample and quilt it and then toss it in the wash (in a lingerie bag). Since I don't put quilts in the dryer, I rescue my sample before going into the dryer.
