I'm about to quilt the background of a white baby quilt and want to mark the pattern so I can machine quilt it. I can't use white chalk and don't trust Mark-B-Gone and disappearing ink on white fabric.

I've heard of people having trouble getting colored chalk off fabric but it seems like my only option. Who's used colored chalk on white and did you have any problems?

I used the yellow Chaco-Liner. Did NOT come out

Don't use colored chalk. I KNOW personally that the blue chalk doesn't come out and others have mentioned they have had problems with red and green. I have always used the Purple be gone but you got to quilt it quickly because it use to vanish in less than 24 hours. I even had a client iron a top with the blue be gone markings and was amazed when I soaked the top overnight with a product called Linen Wash and the blue was actually removed. It is important to always do a test before proceeding.

I'd like to know too. I did use washable crayon markers on a quilt with light blue background. You might try that on a scrap of the white if you plan on washing the quilt after. I needed to completely wet the scrap I tested. The crayon marker came out.

When I hand quilt a top that is difficult to mark I trace my design on wash away interfacing and pin it to my quilt top. When quilting is finished I wash it like I would any other quilt. I do cut away any large pieces of access first. I have used this method on several quilts from table runners to full size wedding quilts.

STOP, step away from the coloured chalk! It will not come out. You might want to try quilting through Golden Thread paper or a tissue paper pattern and tear it away after quilting.

Mark-B-Gone does come out, but always test first.

Thank you SOOO much for suggesting this. I'm leaving now to go buy some. It's a much better idea than marking my quilt and hoping it behaves like the test swatch.
