I always wanted to try smocking. It looks just so very beautiful. There is a great blog by a lady who hand dyes fabrics and then smocks or pleats them to make jewelry:

    http://tinctory.blogspot.com/

Need to learn in a quite moment, though.
I checked out the blog, that is the most unusually jewelry I think I have ever seen. It is just beautiful.

I love to make yo yos. What do you all use them for?

I have some crochet I keep handy for times when I can't be at the sewing machine. I crochet better than I knit! When things are really chaotic I prefer a project that is so detailed that I have to concentrate hard enough that I forget the chaos for a little while at least.

When we had our house built, about ten years ago, the contractor ran late and our apartment lease ran out six weeks before the house was done. We moved into the upstairs while they finished off the downstairs and I got out my sewing machine, cut 2-1/2 inch strips and pieced a king-sized log cabin quilt. I still call it my tooth-grinding quilt. So funny--and your post made me remember that. Thanks.

Applique, nothing elaborate, sometimes just hearts on a square.

I usually hand quilt a whole cloth lapquilt. It's easy to baste the quilt together, I use stencils and while I plot it out before basting, sometimes I pencil the stencil patterns on as I go. It's convenient, it doesn't get boring because sometimes I'm stitching, sometimes I'm figuring out where the stensil goes...the whole project fits in a comforter bag with the lap frame and all.
