I am not in a guild.. I sew by myself at home BUT I do sew quilts for Quilts for Kids and I love it!! I am so glad that I found them. I just ordered 2 kits from them yesterday and I didn't have to pay anything (but shipping to get the kits to me) I am sick in the head with sewing, always have to be working on a couple of things, but that gets very expensive. With Quilts for Kids I spend hardly any money. They send me the fabric I have to supply the thread, batting and the time. I pay shipping to get the kits to me and I pay the shipping to return them. I know on their website they have a link for groups who would be interested in more than just a couple of quilt kits

I love to make quilts and try different patterns. My nieces and nephews aren't having babies any more, so I make quilts to donate to Project Linus now. I always like to buy fabric when it's on sale so that I have a good selection in my stash.

Perhaps the OP meant can she keep records or all the costs involved and use them when she figures her income taxes?

This is how many of my quilts go. We have 12 different charities that our guild provides quilts for. Sometimes I just give the quilt to the guild, other times I specify, such as the NICU.

I enjoy making quilts. I am no longer working and have the time to do them. Also I love to be able to make something that will let the receiver know that they have been thought of. I love love love to go to quilt give a way days at our guild We give quilts away twice a year and June we gave away 209 quilts. In December we gave away 208. I get really excited to see all the recipient representatives and to hear the stories of how much the quilts have touched lives. It brings me such joy to see my quilt go to somewhere where it will be loved and cherished and especially used.


I have sent several quilts to Romania to a young ladies home. I have also done several quilts that are auctioned off to raise funds for the various charities.

This is how our guild works as well. We also have a "work day" once a year and as a group sew all day for the charity. Sometimes we use donated fabric some times we work from our own stash.

As for your question about a business - I am not sure how that would work.

Bless you all for your kind efforts. I watch the news and get so discouraged but when I hear about all the good hearts in this group, I'm encouraged. The only charity things I've done are for my DDs unit where she works. She's a midwife and the donations are for the sweet little babies that don't make it. But, I haven't done any for awhile. I need to step up and make some lovely things for those little ones again. Thanks for the reminder..... and bless you all.

I do charity quilts on my own, I do not belong to any groups or guilds. I do it for the satisfaction of the quilting hobby that I love and must give them to someone. Everyone in my family have all the quilts they can use. I have sold quilts in the past, that is not as satisfying as giving to charity, mine go to Project Linus.

I donate quilts to a local group that helps foster children. My guild makes donation quilts to give but I quilt helping with those because they were using fabrics no one would buy for their own quilts, cheap batting, and fast sloppy work to get them done. I don't know about doing donation quilts as a business. That sounds like a lot of work for no pay.
