I usually pick the pattern first then the fabric. Sometimes I have a particular fabric that I really like and then have to match it for a pattern I have already selected.

Fabric usually,, unless I am making a special quilt where I have choosen the block first. I make album quilts for special occassions annd then find the fabric centered around that persons favorite colors or theme.

I usually pick the pattern first and then the fabric. I just finished a mystery quilt and would not have picked the fabrics I used if I had the pattern first. It's usually the pattern telling me the fabrics I need to use.

when I know the pattern I want. I know the look. It takes me trial and error to pick the right fabrics. Kinda of like picking paint for a room. I do a test block then look at it for a while to see if I like it.
I am working on a quilt now with test blocks that didn't make the cut. They are getting a second chance in a new quilt.
