Have any of you heard of the chicken scratch, where you use gingham material, crochet thread?. You cut out 12 inch squares and go from there. I just don't know how to make the stitches. Can anyone please give me some suggestions?.

    Thank you,
    charlotte

I don't have a quilt, but I have a little tablecloth done some years ago by my aunt. It just looks to me like a regular cross stitch, but done on gingham instead of Aida cloth, using the squares as a guide.

I used to do chicken scratch many years ago. I had forgotten how to do it. So I just looked in up on the internet. Check out this site. It has general directions

    Hope this helps.

hi, When I did chicken scratch yrs ago there were several books available. But it is also called Tenneriffe. I think that is how it is spelled. It really looks great when done. but when you buy the gingham check fabric to do it be sure it is perfect squares in the fabric or it will not come out right, and some of the fabric does not have perfect squares. Hi,
All the chicken scratch I have done in the pass, was with X like cross stitch. I haven't done one in years.
    I hope this helped.

Charlotte, I'm sooo glad you posted this question!! I had completely forgotten about this technique. I have a ton of blue gingham left from Alicia's halloween costume, it would make a great keepsake pillow for her!! Thanks for all the wonderful links!! I've bookmarked them and plan to put them to use in the near future!
