Our local sewing machine repair guy said not to use the canned air.

The best trick is to de-lint often. Oil, oil, delint, oil. AFter I've brushed well, etc, I DO give it a shot of canned air, and have done it for years and love it feeling clean. OIl, oil, oil, brush, oil. (Did I already say oil enough?) My machine is a Bernina 830, new in 1975, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else!
