My husband is color blind to certain colors. He sees shades very well. With him around I won't have to spend money on a ruby beholder, just have him sort medium from dark and check for shade match.

many quilts are designed in gray-scale so that the color does not interfer with the design process-
a successful quilt has a nice balance of LIGHTS, MEDIUMS, DARKS...with disregard to color---i have found with the 3 color blind members of our family---they really (SEE) with the values....good contrast in value is seen regardless of what color used.

do you know what his color deficits are? My hubby is about 40% colorblind ~ we've been trying to refine his scope, and find those borderlines of where the change is... My husband cannot see any reds lighter than 40% ~ in other words, he sees them as shades of gray, not red ~ any many yellows he doesn't see, either, unless they are over the 50% hue threshold ~ he sees them as white.

Blue seems to be one color CB people see, the most shades of it. Maybe a high contrast blue / white / red or blacks and greens with a 3rd color?

Being that he's your nephew, why not ask him .... or his parents for guidance in choosing what he can enjoy.

Chris, I haven't seen my suggestion talked about so far. My DH is red/green color blind. I have found color to be a most interesting topic when it comes to what looks good to him.

Is your quilt a surprise to him? If it is not, why not have him go with you to a fabric store or a clothing store to explore colors? My DH sees blues and yellows very well. My favorite color is hot pink and I wear a lot of it. He sees it in blues since hot pink is made up of blue pigmant. Pastels become kind of a wash out and look mostly white to him. Quite often, even a red will look good to him. I love having him go with me to my LQS to look at fabrics. You might be surprised.

I think you are a sweet Aunt for considering how he will visually see your quilt. I bet you are learning a lot about color because of the gift you are making for him. Bless you, Linda :-D

It is difficult to give a good answer unless we know the degree of his colorblindness Otherwise just speculating on what he might or might not see.
