I tend to find a fabric that I like and go from there. Sometimes i have a pattern in mind sometimes not. TO start out you can buy FQ packs or pre cuts. I love wild colors.
All of the LQS know me. I usually just go in with a color in mind and go nuts. I usually end up needing help finding the last color I need. Most LQS are very helpful with color selection.

I think if I had a local shop I would try to put together colors myself. But as it is, I have to rely on the colors on my monitor which almost never seem to match what I get.
One time I was buying a fabric and emailed the shop to see if they could pick out a solid to match. They said no so I didn't buy from them. Since then I've bought kona and moda color cards but I still won't shop at that website.
