I attended a crafty quilt class given by our local guild, that was just that, using colored pencils (there are certain pencils made for this process, but you might be able to use regular ones. Try it?) to color prequilted quilt square, then using a fabric medium to set the colors. I used the square in a tote bag for my DD. My grand dog Nala loved trying it on for size! Lol! I have even used permanent markers to make a fabric match another better by adding my own color accents. I just coat it with fabric medium after I finish coloring.

Be careful with the permanent markers, they can bleed.

The newest Quilters Newsletter Magazine ( QNM) has a tutorial on this very subject this month. A simple transfer technique that uses card stock, markers and alcohol. I am going to try it someday day.

Hope this helps a bit to get an idea for transfer methods.

I took a class with Sherry Rodgers Harrison. We used Inktense pencils and fabric medium. You can find it with and without irridesence. I tried it using the medium 1st and then the pencils or pencil first and then brush on the medium. Try a sample...
