Colored pencils and quilting
#211
This is a quilt top I'm making for my sister with the blocks that my mother colored using watercolored pencils. These are water activated. I did some shading which my mother (90 years old with Parkinsons and osteoarthritic hands) is unable to do.

Soon I will be visiting my Dad with Alzheimer's and my Mom who has arthritis in her hands. I am wondering about preparing some pieces so they can color while we are visiting. Sometimes my Mom has been known to talk a little more when she is also doing something... I thought this might be a great project.

I drew them on muslin (use best quality with higher thread count like Legacy Studio muslin - JoAnn's) with pencil. Be sure to prewash to take out sizing. She colored them. We would have a small colored picture for reference. Now we lay out the pencils for her and also trace around the shape with the color she is to use.
My mother has been very determined to keep busy. She was doing wool applique with a running stitch (couldn't do blanket stitch any more). We would have needles pre-threaded for her. She finally gave up on applique. I had hoped she could do blobs of color on paper or fabric and then draw in flowers with a micron pigma pen, but that's not possible any more. She has been a very creative person in the past.

I cut two layers of foam board and put them in a ziplock bag. We would stretch the fabric and pin it with large push tacks to make it easier to handle and also be light weight.

The foam core is a great idea. You are really inspiring me. Just the other day, my DH said that it's tough to visit DMinL on rainy days because we run out of things to say/do. This could really do the trick. Andthe quilt is lovely, too.
