They make fabric markers and fabric crayons. We used them for a church ministry quilting project with children from a local school. They work great, but must be "set" with an iron. I love the soft look of fabric crayons!

For permanence and vivid color, the new Sharpy Stainers are the way to go. You will love them.

I just did some research on those, and they look GREAT! I use the Fabrico markers, but these are much cheaper. I wouldn't use anything but either of these, though- especially with a white background. There are many more colors with the fabrico markers.

I teach classes on color tinting and embroidery. You can use Crayola crayons and color them as dark and vivid as the actual crayon color. Just keep adding layers and press with a paper towel between attempts. One of my students did a Halloween project where the colors were extremely vivid--true orange, black, gold.

LOL, that was my exact thought!! Permanent if I don't want them to be and will wash out if I want them permanent!! Just my luck!!

I use fabric pen, any art store will have a variety of colors just for fabric, I color my labels that way. If you iron the label when you are finished it will set in.

I tried sharpies on a scrap piece. Didn't work good. Spread out of the pencil line. I bought paint markers made for fabric. Works GREAT. Stays in place, bright colors. GD and I traces flowers using light pencil then colored them in. Did a great job and washed nicely.

Just ran down to Michael's for the Ink Tense pencils. By the time I got there I had forgotten about the Sharpie Stainers.
(duh...) Anyway, the Ink Tense pencils are $40.00!!!!!

Sharpies definitely bleed! My DS's Disney Cruise signature pillowcase was ruined when I finally washed it. He didn't care, but it was so pretty before. I quickly chain stitched over the names so they can fade away now.
