    I normally find a pattern I like then start pulling from my stash and then purchase any additional fabrics I might need to finish the quilt top. Occasionally I will buy fabric but at the time, I know what pattern I am going to use. So pattern first in my book !!!

    For me it can be either. Sometimes I find a pattern and just know I have to make it. Sometimes it's the fabric that I know I have to have and I'll find a pattern for it later.

    I wish I knew! I tend to start by looking at my stash and trying to decide what fabric I want to use. Then I try to figure out a pattern....but I have bought the fabric already, so....did I select the fabric first? Guess I did.

    Either way works though, ya know. You need a "pantry" full of patterns and fabric....or at least I do.

    As long as it is fun.

    I go with what ever takes my fancy. Sometimes the fabric talks to me and sometimes it the pattern. Yes I knon I'm a mad quilter. But I love it. I have also had a beer or two. Happy sewing :}

    I waste spend too much enough time browsing patterns that I when see a fabric I love I think "Ohhh, this would be awesome in that one quilt I saw." So coming up with a pattern for fabric is not too hard for me. The problem comes in when I have more than one pattern in mind and only enough funding to purchase fabric for one of the quilts I want to make! My bucket list gets longer every day...

    I do both. Sometimes I see fabric that I just love so of course I but it. Then I go in search of a pattern. Other times I have a specific project, or gift, in mind. In that case the pattern is first.

    I'm always doing that. I see a fabric I like and buy it. Maybe a vague idea in mind. That's why I have such a huge stash. But you asked for places to get ideas. Just Google or search Quilt patterns. All sorts of images and sites come up.

    I agree, it's the chicken or the egg question. Mostly I acquire fabric and put it together by finding a pattern I like and changing it a lot, or creating my own pattern that best uses the material. Then I usually have to buy a little more fabric to make it work, which why I'm so happy that I live near four good local quilt shops and several more not too far away. Just keep auditioning your fabrics until you can picture a design that works. I also buy just a yard, or even half yards of something specail and then often need to get more of something else for borders, backs, and backgrounds. That's when I check out the big box stores for those, if they have something of good quality to mix in.
