I buy fabric as I come across it. Typically I don't buy patterns as I usually don't exactly follow them anyway. Lol! But I will see something someone has made and think "oh that would work with . . . " and I have fabrics that will do what I envisioned with the addition of a blender or something that my stash doesn't have yet.
So for me it's really a bit of both. But it's almost always at least some of the fabric first.

For me it can be either. Sometimes I find a pattern and just know I have to make it. Sometimes it's the fabric that I know I have to have and I'll find a pattern for it later.
    Ditto from me !

Mostly it's the fabric then the pattern. However, sometimes I see a pattern I like and go to my stash to shop. I just love fabric so if I see something I like I get it because I know it won't be there when I come back! That fear fuels my addiction!!! LOL!

I am very lucky, in that my sister gave me EQ5 a few years ago. I go there, and play around until I think I know what I want. It is very relaxing also. I know when I finally get around to cutting that the quilt will look the way I expect. Before I had the EQ program, I spent many hours pouring over patterns and auditioning fabric.

I do better if I have the pattern in mind first. Every time I buy fabric because I like it, I never can decide what quilt I want to make.

My life would be so much simpler (and my savings account would have a larger balance ) if I found a pattern and then bought the yardage to make that pattern, and stuck with it............But I am having a lot of fun getting fabric I love when I see it, even it I do not have a pattern in mind.......

Let me ask the question. Do you find a recipe and then go buy the ingredients or get a cart full if food and then look for a recipe to use it up.

Thankfully I have a fairly nice stash but when I start to look for the next project, I'll go thru my patterns, then my stash, then the fabric store if I need additional fabrics. If I know who the quilt will go to and they have hinted their tastes, then its the fabric first, then the pattern, then the fabric store if necessary.

If and when I hit a fabric store, I might be in there for a certain fabric but if another fabric(s) catches my eye, they tend to come home with me too. Couple weeks ago I went to the Des Moines quilt show and then over to Fons & Porter Warehouse fabric sale with the intentions of looking for whites and beiges only. I came out of that building with 73 yds of everything but whites and beiges.................they didn't have any that spoke to me.......Have yet to fold the fabrics up yet...........don't know where I'm going to put them..............UGH!!!!!
