My son will be moving in with me, and that means my sewing room/guest room will be his room. My sewing room will have to move into my bedroom. I'm clearing out my smaller 2nd closet for my 'stash'. I already use card tables for fabric cutting, but now I'll lose the desk that has been my makeshift sewing cabinet.

I need a real sewing cabinet, one that expands when in use, and can fold up when not in use.

Which ones are best? and one that won't break the bank- budget is a factor.

I would check thrift shops regularly to see if you can find an older sewing machine cabinet that you can adapt to your machine. Old sewing machine cabinets do not sell well in thrift shops, so if you keep up the hunt you should be able to find something suitable for very few dollars. You might even need to buy one with the machine inside, then take out the machine and donate it back to the thrift shop! Be sure to measure your machine first and carry a measuring tape in your purse; you want to make sure that your machine will fit. Also, if you intend to close up the cabinet when not in use, you will probably have to drill new holes to bolt the machine to the base (assuming you have a machine that can be bolted.

All of the new cabinets I have seen are extremely expensive for what you get.

I have a small fold up sewing desk that I got at a thrift store for $10 I have seen them for around $45-$50 brand new... you can always put a card table behind it when it is time for quilting

If you google [yourcity] yard sales, you'll probably come up with a site for that city and for surrounding towns (for example "Houston yard sales". These are listings like newspaper classifieds -- people wanting to buy, sell or give away items, not listings for yard sales. Then just search for sewing machines. I check the ones close to us periodically, and there are always sewing machines, both with and without cabinets that people are practically giving away. In fact, I bought a 1-yr. old king sized Serta pillow top mattress for $100 from one listing.

    Good luck.

For a long time mine sat on a desk I found for $25.00. It was big enough for my computer and my sewing machine. Keep looking in the paper and watch for a desk.

I've got a desk now in the guest room/sewing room. I'd like to get a compact sewing cabinet that folds out when in use, and compacts down to a small size.
    Thanks,
    MaryAnna

Here's a website devoted to sewing machine cabinets. I think you will find they are very pricey new. If you really need one of the newer types of designs with more storage, then I would recommend checking Craigslist several times a day to see if anything comes up for sale there. They are hard to sell, so I would bargain for 25% or less of original price. Leave your name and contact info with the seller if they won't agree to your price; sometimes they change their minds after their item hasn't sold for several weeks.

Has anyone got the sewing table that Hancock Fabrics advertises in their flyer? It is the white one with drawers that can be installed on either the right or the left side. I have thought about getting it because the top folds down. It is usually $99 on sale.

I use a folding table that is 4 feet long, 30 inches wide, does have the drop down place in the front for a keyboard, the machine can sit there. When not in use, can be folded up and stored against the wall, under a bed, etc. It's original use was intended to be a computer table, but is an excellent sewing table.
