Hi friends, I am usually pretty good at math, but I am not sure how to take a jelly roll and charm pack pattern and make it into one where I cut the strips and squares myself. I am interested in a pattern called "Two by Four" which calls for a jelly roll and charm but what I have is 21 fat quarters. Sew....do I have enough material??
    Can you help?
    Thanks

You have more than enough fabric. 21 Fat Quarters is 5 1/4 Yds. A Jelly Roll is About 2 1/2 yds.

i think so but my math could be wrong, hopefully some one will double check my math.

a jelly roll typically has 40 strips or so by the entire width of the fabric.

    so that's 2.5 times 40 = 100 inches

since you only have half the width of the fabric you need 200 inches.

you 378 inches of fabric so that's plenty left over to make the charm squares.

 Yep, the math is correct.

    @Sheree-
But just be aware that you might need to modify the cutting instructions of some patterns and cut an extra 2.5" strip from the FQ.

For instance, if the directions call for cutting three 12.5" pieces from each Jelly Roll strip, you wouldn't be able to get from just the two 22" strips cut from the FQ (unless you joined the remnant from the two strips).

But you would still have plenty of fabric leftover.

Okay, thanks, I think I am following you. To get the variety of material for the 2 sizes of cuts, I would just have to figure how many squares I would need (charm size) from each fat quarter, then the rest would be jelly roll width (2-1/2"). I am okay piecing some of the strips.
I just have never worked with a jelly roll so I did not even have an idea of how many strips were in a pack! (same with charm--I really do like to cut--I know, weird).

    Here's a FQ, 18" x 22", showing how it would be cut.

The patches outlined in lime green:
Four 2.5" x 22" strips (jelly roll) and
    Two 5" squares (charm pack).

    The leftovers (approx) would be:
    3" x 22" strip and
    5" x 12" piece

Wow! Are you a quilting angel or what! thank you very much!
I see now that I have a little wiggle room for cutting mistakes, for which I am grateful.
