Crackers Block

Crackers Block
I am in the process of making a quilt using the Crackers block. I have purchased 5 inch charms, however I see the pattern calls for 6 inch blocks. How do I go about calculating the size of the three strips that make up the center? Or is this a trial and error process? I believe I have attached a picture of the block. Also the website is http://cuttopieces.blogspot.com/2011...er-scraps.html. I am a fairly new quilter and am confused on how to create this block with what I have. Your help is appreciated.

You do realize that you won't be able to create a finished block of 10" as is produced in the instructions. You should be able to get an 8.25" finished block using your charm pack. I would certainly try making a test block You are dealing with two problems, a pieced block set on point and half square triangles. I drew this on EQ7 and came out with the dimensions of your center strips should be 2 7/16" x 6 5/16". Try cutting your strips at 2.5" and 6.25" and see if that work. It is geometry that makes things difficult. Good Luck.

I consider myself an intermediate quilter - and - as far as I read those directions - they are dreadful.
That said - ask someone here to draft templates for you so you can get the "exact" size to cut your pieces.
I am so not a fan of that oversize method that she is showing. (I do trim HST's, units, and blocks, but it's a shaving off - not a chunk!)

Do you have only the charms, or are you supplementing with yardage?
If you look more carefully at this pattern, the sewing could be achieved more easily with two blocks, set on point. One block is just 3 strips sewn together, and the other is a QST. Getting the coloration right might be a challenge, depending on the fabrics you're working with. For a 2-color (not necessarily 2-fabric) quilt it would be easy.
