I have been having my quilts machine quilting since the quality of my piecing has improved. For queen size quilts I've been paying about 1 1/2 cents per square inch for pantograph design work -- nothing custom. After seeing some of the fantastic machine quilting some of you do, it makes me wonder what I'd have to pay for some of that custom work. Would any of you mind sharing some information in that regard? Thanks.

I think it really depends on how intricate the quilting is that you like, the amount of thread used, the kind of thread used, and the time involved. You kind of have to know what you want before you can get a specific quote. There are tons of quilters advertising on the internet where you might get more of an idea also. Sorry, I couldn't help more, but there may be ladies who quilt for a living that can tell you. I am just beginning and I do free motion only.

I quilt for other people. I only do hand-guided free motion quilting on my longarm. My prices start at .015 and go up to .06 per square inch. For ruler work, I charge $15.00/hour - very time consuming! Most of my customers ask for block-specific designs (usually 2 different designs to keep it interesting) and a separate design for the border. That costs .025-.035 psi, depending on the complexity of the designs they want. I also charge $5.00 for solid thread and $7.00 for variegated thread, with $2.00 for every thread color change within the quilt.

Hope that gives you some idea of the cost of having your quilts quilted with something other then an edge to edge pattern or panto.

My charges are for a panto or easy free hand - .01 psi and for custom .03 psi. That includes the use of rulers, templates and some stencils. If it is really detailed I charge .05 psi.
