I do the same. When I piece the borders, I try to do a bias seam.

I'm in agreement with most of the other quilters. I don't like to piece together borders unless I have to. When doing this remember to measure your quilt in the middle and use that measurement as it's more accurate than measuring the length of the quilt that you're going to sew the border to.

I just read this info bit which was a link from American Quilter's Society newsletter, that gives good factual info. I often do cut across the fabric for borders, but when I make a really special quilt I go all out and buy fabric long enough to cut the whole border in one piece. Check this out and see what you think: http://www.quiltviews.com/should-i-c...9-14&utm_term=

I AGREE !! It depends on the size of the quilt and how much fabric you have. I am one of those quilters that never have enough of one of the fabrics in a quilt so I am always having to improvise !!

I too - if I have enough fabric - prefer length of fabric , but have been known to cut WOF if the yardage is tight.

The reason being, is that when loaded on the the frame I find that the edges do not distort as much. I also only measure the center of the quilt for my borders. That insures that the center line of the quilt and borders (in both directions) are the exact same size.

I cut my borders WOF which means I need to piece them. My last border are ususally 8"-10" so I usually sew them with a straight seam rather than diaginal since it takes less fabric. After the quilt is quilted and bond you really can not see the straight seam vs the diaginal seam.

i only use LOF (length of fabric) for my solid borders - even if that means i have to piece them.
(if i do have to piece, i do it on a diagonal. the seams are less visible.)

a pieced border will usually have a mix of patches cut on WOF and LOF.
that depends on the border pattern i use.

I cut my borders on WOF...I don't mind pieced borders. If you have a 90" border, how do you cut it LOF? I don't have a table that long! If I have to fold fabric more than once, my strips come out wonky.
