    The comments have been great. I find the ruler that has the slits every 1/2 inch very helpful when I have to cut lots of strips. Omni gird has a good book about 'cutting' it goes over all the issues that have been brought up, plus a few more. One is that you either use your mat for measurement or your ruler. There maybe differences in them. I usually line up my fabric with one of the horizontal lines on the mat and use my rulers. Having a mat you can rotate, so you can take off the first piece to make it straight, then rotate the mat--or if you can walk around the table so that you cut without moving the fabric. (I am sure this is as clear as mud!)
