Can anyone tell me what size blocks you need to start with to end up with a 12 1/2 inch block? It would be 12 inch finished.

I can't, but thought perhaps you might want to edit your title to say D9P block size question! Simply because the way you have it now, it is going to be ignored due to the fact that there are thousands of posts with the same title!

Good look...I can't do the math tonight...

I think if you cut your squares 4.5 inches you will end up with a 12.5 inch block (12 inches finished)

    I started with 5" blocks...sewed together comes to 14".
    (5 + 5 + 5 = 15" less seam allowance of 1/2 & 1/2= 14)

    Cut that 14" block into your 4 sections...now each mini block is a 7 x 7 block.

Square those to 6 1/2" (leave your "littlest" block in corner on each one you trim) and you'll have it nice and even.

This will sew to a 12 1/2" block
    (6 1/2 + 6 1/2 = 13 less 1/2 seam allowance = 12 1/2)

Otherwise you have to deal with 1/8" measurements and I don't do those well :)

We've had this question before. When you cut up a block for a d9p you lose half an inch of its size. This means you would need to start with a 9 patch that is 12.5" finished size to get a d9p that is 12" finished. Now if you want all your patches in the 9 patch to be the same size, that means each one is 4 1/6". That isn't easily cut. That's why this keeps coming up... there is no ***easy*** answer. (You can use different size blocks in the 9 patch, but some of them won't be squares, and it gets complicated cutting and putting together just the right ones.)
