I went a very long time with just a darning foot (I like open toe), no walking foot. It is an absolute necessity. I can straightline quilt with my regular foot, I can't FMQ with it.

I now have a walking foot, but probably won't use it much as I mostly do FMQ. The walking foot came with a SITD sole, so my edge stitch foot (SITD foot) won't get anymore use on quilts, it does not move the fabric.

Walking foot, you can use it for SITD so you don't need a SITD foot. Darning foot can come later when your ready to tackle FMQ

I have all three and use....ALL THREE! Different feet for different things.

I'm still dreaming of a walking foot with SITD. For now, I have a generic from Joanns. Full price was $15 and I used my 40% off coupon on it. It works just fine on my Brother. I had a dealer tell me the feet aren't interchangeable between brands. Not true. You just have to know if you have a low shank (most likely), high shank, or slant. Check out Amazon for feet. My darning foot was less than $10 on Amazon.

At present I have been using the regular presser foot. Didn't know the different. I have the rolling foot, but did not know what it was for, never used it. My machine is a 2nd hand Singer about 20 yr old. Love this place. Learn something everyday.

I agree with getting the walking foot first. I don't have a SITD foot and haven't needed it.

I don't know if you know this or not but Viking has a new interchangable walking foot. It is supposed to be compatible with other machines as well but not sure which ones. It comes with 2 additional feet and you can get more, like a 1/4 in and rolled hem, etc. The advantage to this foot is that you can do reverse, zig zag and all of those fancy stitches using the walking foot and what ever additional foot you put on. It will take quilting to another whole new level since you can do fance stitches while using a walking foot to control your fabric. A regular SID foot doesn't control fabric like a walking foot does; it works like a 1/4 in basically; keeping it where it's supposed to go.

If you've got it, this looks like a wonderful way to spend $115. $95 for the walking foot and $20 SITD plate. This was by far the cheapest price I found for it.
