Deciding quilt size for a bed with a footboard

My grandparents have a foot board on their bed, it is a double size bed. I made hers 86 x 86 and it fits exactly the way she likes it.

As you can see there is just enough at the bottom to slip between the mattress and the foot board but not a long drop. The pattern you are using as well would have more say I think in how you wanted it to look when it was on the bed. Some patterns ( like the one I used here ) do not have a set center focal point, so it really did not make much difference either way.
