Default Deciding quilt size for a bed with a footboard

I don't want a pillow tuck and my bed has a footboard. Would you make it rectangle so it will drape evenly on the sides and make the top and bottom just meet the head and foot boards....OR would you make it shorter on the top and make the sides and bottom equal lengths?

Just wondering what you would do. I've been curious as to whether it is customary to make it meet the footboard without the drop.

The nice thing about making a quilt is you can make it anyway YOU want it.

I would also try for an equal drop on three sides and for the quilt to come to the end of the mattress by the headboard.

If the mattress is 60 x 80 (queen size), I would try for 90 x 95 - but due to pattern considerations - I would probably go for a square one in this case - the bottom would be behind the footboard.

I also like my feet covered - and my neck. Foldovers at the top - by my head - bother me a lot.

I have a bed with a footboard & don't do a pillow tuck. I did as you said & made it shorter at the top & made the sides & bottom equal. After I had the center part of the quilt done I laid it on the bed & figured out how much drop I needed on the sides & bottom, then how much more at the top to cover the bed. I made a much shorter border at the top. This is the quilt I'm talking about

Your bed, your quilt, make it to suit your needs. Quilts in the past have been made with no drape at all on one side, if that side was pushed up against the wall.

They have also been made with the corners "removed" - so that when they are on the bed, there is no "billow" at the corners.

I think the important thing is to measure your bed. New mattresses are so thick, a queen size becomes a double because it just doesn't cover anymore. I would do 3 sides dropped the same length and the top flush. But then I also like to do pillow shams.

Lots of my quilts have rounded corners because I like the drape better than the square corners. I have seen quilts and bedspreads that are long and tucked under the foot of the bed. I also prefer pillow covers and don't like the looks of the pillow tuck.
Make it the way you like it. It is a personal thing.

Thanks everyone. I had not thought of having the corners removed, nor of having the corners rounded. All of the responses give me something to think about. Again, thanks.
