Default Def & Pix "Modern Quilt"

I've been looking at books/magazines re "Modern Quilts". I'm trying to figure out the definition. This is what I'm thinking:
    1. Minimal not fussy
    2. Crisp edges
    3. "Clean colors" no tones, only tints or high intensity
    4. Background colors usually white or shade of light grey
    5. Assymetrical
    6. Often straight piecing

This is just a stab at it. What do you know and please post pix that are an example. Thank you

Mine was made before the modern movement started.
My definition is very simple geometric blocks.

I agree with all your observations. I also expect a modern quilt to have a lot of open background space, more than a traditional quilt.

I also have reached the same conclusions as you have. I say it as "lots of negative space," which to me is the same as minimal not fussy.

The more of them I see, the more I am liking them!! But probably will never completely desert my love of traditional blocks in mid-1800s reproduction fabrics.

    So I think I'd add
    7. Geometrics or simple shapes
    8. Often solid fabrics.

Needs to have more than 1//2 of these criteria

    What else does anyone have?

I was just at the Intl Quilt Show in Chicago today where quite a few modern quilts were on display.

The other element I would add is simplicity in quilting.

You don't see feathers, Mc-Tavishing, etc.

Simple line quilting - both straight and curved concentric lines.
