I made my DD a set ....of a quilt,shams & pillows,along with a framed block.They live in Fl, so during the hottest mos,she keeps the quilt folded across the bottom 1/3rd & props the pillows along the headboard.It's a guest room, but very easy to move the quilt off if the bed is needed.

I wouldn't do anything to them. My mom made many quilts and ofcourse they are all to small for our beds these days . Just appreciate them for what they are and who made them.

Depending whether the quilt is directional or not, you could turn it sideways on the bed...no fuss, no muss, and no one would know the difference.

You could also purchase a dust ruffle - cut out the part that fits over the mattress and stitch the skirt directly under the quilt edge using SID next to the binding...even use a basting stitch if you think you'll need to take it off again.

I like the ideas of using the quilt as a "topper" - I'm guessing it is big enough to "sleep under" now?

My bed has two quilts showing....since like a lot of us, my Grandmother made twins and fulls and I have a king bed! Besides, the two of us like dramatically different levels of warmth to sleep....so my side has several quilts and hers has just one. They don't always match but the handmade aspect always ties them together and they look just fine. Besides, this way---I get to enjoy seeing two at a time instead of one!
